PERJUMPAAN KONSEP TUHAN: DAYAK DAN KATOLIK

This paper explores the intersection between the understanding of divinity in Dayak culture and the teachings of Catholic theology. In Dayak tradition, the concept of God encompasses both transcendence and immanence: God or the divine force is often identified with ancestral spirits or supernatural entities that govern the universe. Nevertheless, some Dayak sub-ethnic groups demonstrate monotheistic tendencies. For instance, the Kanayatn people recognize Jubata as the name of God, believed to be present in all aspects of human life. The Uud Danum tribe acknowledges a divine figure, Jahtah Mohotarak, as the creator and sustainer of the universe. On the other hand, Catholic teaching affirms the existence of one Triune God Almighty, loving, and the creator of all things. At the meeting point of these two belief systems, various studies have shown processes of inculturation and interfaith dialogue, where Dayak cultural elements such as divine titles (e.g., Jubata and Tanangaan) are associated with the concept of God in Catholic faith (Father, Son, and Holy Spirit).
